There’s nothing like waking up early on a Saturday, springing out of bed to open the window and being greeted with the realization that the weatherman was right all along: 20 degrees and sun, a perfect day at the local MX track awaits!
With spring in the air and summer just around the corner, I am one of many riders excited to dust off the dirt bikes from winter storage and spin some laps. In fact, I have been lucky enough to ride my YZ250F a few times already with milder temperatures early on in southern Ontario.
As always, I find myself interacting (these days, from a social distance) with riders around the pits and, in particular, Yamaha riders. For me, it’s an opportunity to hear straight from enthusiasts themselves what these YZs are capable of and what they mean to casual weekend riders and hardcore racers alike. From checking all the performance boxes to offering up unheard-of reliability, these bikes continue to impress me.
I’m often asked about the Power Tuner app. For those of you who don’t know, the Yamaha Power Tuner Smartphone app is one of the most sought-after platforms for Yamaha riders to communicate with their bikes. Making trackside fueling and ignition timing changes instantly and uploading them to your YZ has never been easier and is completely free!
My favourite feature is the Maintenance Log, which allows me to keep track of running time on my oil, oil filters and engine work. I still laugh thinking back to when I would wipe the dirt off my 1”x1” hour-meter to log the hours with corresponding maintenance on an oil-stained piece of paper in hopes I didn’t lose it.
Not to mention, riding in various types of dirt and sand here in southern Ontario, I have also made great use of the Mapping function to make adjustments on the fly depending on the track and conditions. For the more aggressive racers, the Race Log is perfect for keeping a record of results in relation to bike setup, location, weather and other running data.
But enough of me talking, check out the video below for a tutorial on setting up and navigating the Yamaha Power Tuner App. I’ll see you at the track!
